More Than MTV... Master of Makeup

Rihanna is not an unfamiliar name to most. She is popular in many fields and can easily be called a creative in each field that she has created products for. She was born on the island of Barbados in 1988 with the name Robyn Rihanna Fenty.

Rihanna is most notably famous for her music. She grew up in a broken home with an addict father and severe issues with continual, crippling headaches. She turned singing with a group of friends as an outlet for the stress that distracted most other areas of her life. She landed an audition with producer Evan Rodgers when she was 15 years old and one year later moved to Connecticut with Rodgers and his wife. She was signed to her first record deal in 2005 and has had immense success since. She has sold over 75 million singles and is considered to be one of the most successful artists of this time because of her creativity in integrating reggae club music into her own works.Image result for rihanna

Beyond music, Rihanna has entered both the fashion and cosmetic arenas. Her most recent creative products being her makeup line Fenty. The main reason this cosmetic line can be considered different and more creative than others is simply because of Rihanna’s mindfulness for inclusivity. Rihanna used makeup as a way to express herself ever since she was young. Disappointed by the lack of breadth of makeup that is compatible with various skin tones, Rihanna took it upon herself to create a line that was not only inclusive, but also universal.

Rihanna’s focus was to create a line that specifically was suited to hard to match skin tones as well as creating products that were universally usable for every skin tone. In her own words, Rihanna has created a brand that was invented to inspire lovers of makeup to get out of their comfort zones. “Makeup is there for you to have fun with, it should never feel like pressure. It should never feel like a uniform.” Rihanna is begging her followers to be as creative as they can be while using her already creative products.

Not only are her products themselves creative in the way that it took her years to furnish the perfect 40 shades of foundation, 25 variants of face sculpting products, a universal lip color, and many more, Rihanna’s packaging is also unlike any other brand of cosmetics. Her sleek designs are also functional, utilizing magnets and portable brushes not seen in other brands.

But Rihanna’s creativity has not ceased with one singular launch of a set of products. She is continually launching and working on new products that are themed differently than the mainstream products. Looking for new makeup? Have a skin tone that seems impossible to match? Check out Fenty beauty for inclusive and creative products.

  1. I don't really listen to Rihanna's music, but it's really interesting that she used music as a kind of escape from everything else going on in her life. But I've heard nothing but good things about Fenty Beauty! I think it's amazing that she has created a makeup line with the intention of inclusivity. I think it's important for people of color everywhere to be able to feel like they are represented not just in the media, but also in the realm of fashion and cosmetics, and I'm really happy Rihanna has done such a good job of it!

  2. It is interesting to see how creative famous musical artists' fashion and makeup lines in another domain compare to their notable work. I think that Rihanna's musical creativity definitely trickled into Fenty, contributing to its uniqueness and success.

  3. The other day in class we talked about bands who switch it up every time they release a new album and I feel like Rhianna does that but like with everyday of her life. To listen to her early music and her current stuff is like listening to a completely different artist. She has this intense desire to create new things and innovate. I honestly cannot believe she had to be the one to create an inclusive makeup line. It seems like the easiest thing to do that she has done but TGod she did.
