Anybody who has a Netflix account or any sort of social media presences has no doubt heard about Stranger Things. For those of you have escaped the hype of the show, the first season of this Netflix original series follows a group of middle to high school students who are trying to find their friend who has gone missing and end up uncovering government experiments and secrets about another dimension. The show had such a boom of success after the first season, prompting the creation and recent release of the second season, Stranger Things 2. While the show and cast have become incredibly well known, the creative minds behind the show have somewhat less fame.
Motivated to create a show that was true to themselves and their style, the Duffer brothers used the nostalgia of their childhood to create a show straight out of the 1980s but adapted to the modern world. They didn’t want to create a show that was reminiscent of the 80s but instead a show that was a reimagination of that era. The finished product of Stranger Things is a unique cultural experience that pulls iconic sound, visual, and image references from the 80s to combine them with the modern age of internet. The Duffer brother understand that internet and TV are becoming the new cinema and worked to create a show that is cinematic in its own right. The result is a show that draws from a multitude of inspirations and genres and intermingles multiple generations to set a new precedent for horror/sci-fi TV series.

I'm really glad you wrote about the Duffer brothers because people so often focus on actors of really popular TV shows and forget about the people who created them who are the real creatives in my mind. I think it's very interesting that when they tried to please other people, the brothers failed, but when they were creative and unique by sticking to what they liked, they succeeded and other people responded well. I also think that things like the Stranger Things pop up bar that was in Chicago or the fact the people used Stranger things themed decorations for Halloween really shows that they made an impact in their field and created something really new making them big C creatives.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog post!! I learned a lot about the Duffer brothers that I honestly did not know before. I have heard a lot about this show, yet have not gotten to actually give it a chance. Now, I definitely know I will be. The impact that they have made on many in today's society is important to recognize as one can see they've totally taken the TV world by storm. Their creativity and dedication to their work is truly admirable and shows that they are really one of a kind in their domain. With all of the success and positive feedback they have received for their work thus far, I'm sure it's safe to say they will be doing very amazing things in the years to come. Awesome choice!
ReplyDeleteI love Stranger Things, and I'm really glad you decided to write about the creators! I agree with Yuliya. People tend to focus on people in a show instead of the people that came up with it, even though it wouldn't exist without the latter. I think it's interesting that they found their success in a Netflix original series, rather than traditional Hollywood. It's interesting that they had some success there, but their career really took off when they had the freedom to create the show they wanted. I wonder if they would have had the same freedom if they had been subject to a network? I honestly don't think so. Great post!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness I adore Stranger Things!
ReplyDeleteI find it hard to believe that the Duffer Brothers had a such a rough start considering how successful the show has been. (Then again, they had to start from somewhere). I'm glad that everything worked out in the end for them. It's interesting (and it makes sense) that they became more successful when they started following their intrinsic motivation rather than their extrinsic motivation.
I really enjoyed reading this and learning more about the creators!
I loved this season of stranger things! The Duffer brothers are extremely creative! It's super interesting how the grew from their failure. I love that the show is based of their childhood nostalgia of the 80s. I think the show really nails the time period!
ReplyDeleteStranger Things is such a great show with a huge cult following. It is hard to imagine that the Duffer Brothers were unsuccessful in the beginning of their careers. In watching the show, it is very easy to see that they chose to reimagine, instead of recount, the 80s. I hadn't thought of it that way until I read your post. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSuch an awesome show and my favorite thing about it is that it isn't a representation of the 80s, its exactly as you said, a recreation. This show has so much depth and now knowing the story of the brothers and where they have come from, including their intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, they are even more awesome. I also think it is amazing that two brothers, twins at that, can collaborate so closely and constantly with no obvious conflict. Can't wait for season 3!!
ReplyDeleteAs we see more and more creatives in this class, it seems like a common trait is persistence and unwavering confident in a unique creative vision. I'm sure it took a lot of conviction for the Duffer Brothers to keep pursuing their goal of creating a series that matched their styles, despite doubts and holdups. And I bet it helped to have the constant support of a teammate! Last week's lesson on collaboration really informs my reading of your post. Who knew if these two would have been able to create Stranger Things on their own. Collaboration is key!
