Wham! was a British pop duo formed in 1981, consisting of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. They quickly rose to fame in the 1980s with their catchy tunes, stylish image, and energetic performances. One of their most successful albums was "Make It Big," released in 1984.
"Make It Big" was the second studio album by Wham! and it solidified their status as international pop sensations. The album featured some of their most iconic hits, including "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," "Freedom," and "Careless Whisper." These tracks showcased Wham!'s signature blend of upbeat rhythms, catchy melodies, and infectious hooks.
The members of Wham! brought different strengths to the table. George Michael, with his soulful voice and songwriting prowess, was the creative force behind much of their music. Andrew Ridgeley, on the other hand, contributed to the group's image and stage presence, as well as providing backing vocals.
The creative process for "Make It Big" involved a collaborative effort between George Michael, Andrew Ridgeley, and their producers. The album was recorded during a time of immense success for the duo, following the breakout of their debut album "Fantastic." With their growing popularity, Wham! had more resources and creative freedom to experiment with their sound.
The songs on "Make It Big" reflected the spirit of the 1980s, with their vibrant production and catchy hooks. Tracks like "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" became instant classics, dominating the airwaves and dance floors around the world. Faith Ringgold's process typically begins with extensive research and reflection on historical and cultural themes. She often incorporates storytelling and symbolism into her work, drawing from her own experiences and the collective experiences of her community. Her use of quilting as a medium adds layers of texture and depth to her narratives, creating visually compelling and emotionally resonant artworks. While Wham!'s creativity is expressed primarily through music and performance, Faith Ringgold's creativity manifests through visual art and storytelling. Both artists, however, share a commitment to expressing themselves authentically and connecting with their audiences through their respective mediums. Despite the differences in their creative processes, both Wham! and Faith Ringgold have made significant contributions to their respective fields and have left a lasting impact on popular culture.

I was extremely interested to read this post because I recognized Wham! for their rendition of "Last Christmas", I think? It also was no surprise to me that George Michael was their creative force due to the fact that he is, in my opinion, the more popular of the two. Great post and great tie into your focus book!
ReplyDeleteThis was very interesting! I only recognize this group by their classic "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," but that is always a good one. Honestly, I feel that fame ruins things in life. It's great that artists get the recognition they deserve, but getting famous always causes issues. And, as sad as it is to see our favorite bands break up, I respect the choice to follow their individual goals, styles, and creative thoughts. I do wonder why "Wham!" though.
ReplyDeleteThis post was super interesting! My favorite Christmas song is their "Last Christmas," so as soon as I saw your post I was excited to read it. Before this, I didn't know much about the duo or even what happened to break them up, so that was interesting to read. You are definitely right in saying that they have had a lasting impact on pop culture. Decades later and I still feel like it is hard to come across someone who isn't familiar with one of their songs.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Wham! and watched a documentary on them a while back on Netflix and it delved into how much George Michael really took the reins used songwriting for his self-expression and wrote based on his own experiences. Reading your post reminded me of all the stories from that documentary, I definitely recommend watching it was interesting!
