Iz Mozer: Chicago tattoo artist

After animation jobs became hard to come by during the COVID-19 Pandemic, Iz turned to tattooing in search of employment, but even more so for a community. They have found groups of people connected both digitally and personally that uplift each other and give tips on how to expand their work. While at times Iz finds the tattooing field a bit restrictive as it is a source of comparison, they like to focus on the amount of connections that they have made through the primarily digital community.

Iz moves beyond the idea of a human canvas that many tattoo artists build their philosophy on. Their mission and inspiration is based on caring for others and taking their position in the world into context when designing and operating with others. Their work comes from many different points of inspiration whether working on a flash tattoo where they have to come up with the ideas on their own or they are working on custom tattoos inspired by client's ideas. They express many of the same ideas that Rick Rubin when talking about inspiration along the lines of source providing, filter distilling, and vessel receiving ideas. What makes Iz such a successful creative is having a honed in filter that distills the ideas to the essential and influential.

Iz pushes themself to constantly create new things. Never repeat and I think that is what makes their work feel like they are actually achieving their goal of caring for others. Each work that they do is special and new for every client.

  1. I think Iz Mozer has such an interesting style! I appreciate that they emphasize caring about other people and taking the person's position into context- it makes their tattoos so much more meaningful. Art is much more meaningful and inspirational if it connects to people outside of just the creative. I enjoyed your group's presentation about Mozer!
