How Dr. John Got His Groove Back

Dr. John: The Night Tripper got his start in New Orleans in the 1950's making big, bad, boogie woogie voodoo music. His incorporation of local tribal chants into his bluesy R&B music gained him big name followers such as Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger, and his music came to define the "New Orleans sound." Gris-Gris, his first album, would even go on to be ranked 143rd on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. You've heard him if you've seen Disney's The Princess and the Frog; he sings the movie's opening song "Down in New Orleans."
This is Dr. John.
It's certain that his music has accumulated critical acclaim, and he worked to define a genre that was completely original. However, Dr. John's career has been in a lull since the late 80's/early 90's, and he has been experiencing a similar phenomenon to many of our Creatives from class. His inability to produce work as original and beloved by the general public as his early works is directly parallel to Albert Einstein's struggle to complete groundbreaking work in the post-Theory of Relativity stage of his life. This is merely one example, and we've seen many Creatives struggle to continue to make multiple creative contributions to their respective fields.

Just recently, however, Dr. John has rediscovered his groove. With the help of the singer of my favorite band, The Black Keys, Dr. John has re-imagined his song writing and musical style to produce a new album, titled Locked Down. Dan Auerbach, produces the album in the music business sense of the word, and their collaboration is extremely relevant to topics we've been discussing in class. "It's hard being a musician that's out of fashion," says Auerbach. "When you can play that New Orleans stuff so well without even thinking about it, and can collect that paycheck ... you can't blame him." On Dr. John's new album, however, Auerbach pushed Dr. John to retrieve the magic of his early works.

The pair worked together to re-inspire Dr. John, and Auerbach pushed him by asking him to write its songs outside of his native New Orleans, for example. He also encouraged him to write about personal subject matters, previously unexplored by John.  It's interesting to analyze their partnership, as in class we've discussed examples which both catalyze (Watson and Crick) and hinder creativity (Graham and her husband).  It's certain that Auerbach and John's relationship was extremely beneficial to the creative processes of Dr. John, and the album has received the high acclaim similar to his earlier creative works.

It seems as if John has rediscovered his musical groove, and that Locked Down was the "Aha! moment" that our Creatives describe when creating something especially meaningful. "Everything came together for this album," says Dr. John. "Mystically, spiritually, emotionally, and musically. I wasn't expecting it, but it came together. That's how the world works sometimes." Sounds like inspiration to me.

Sweet Sensations: Cake Balls


Cake balls are pretty much just what they sound like-- cake crumbles mixed up with frosting and molded into a little ball, with the addition of a stick if you want to make it into a pop-- and everybody loves them. Being easy to make and delicious, they are turning into big hits in kitchens & bakeries and becoming especially popular on  the internet. Starbucks have even started selling them! The only problem is that no one knows who to thank for these sweet little treats. The inventor of cake balls remains anonymous. It was a woman named Angie Dudley, author of Bakerella blog and a popular recipe book for these confections, who came up with the idea of placing them on a stick for a handy, on-the-go pop but even she claims that she wasn't the inventor of the cake ball, which are "the base for any great cake pop".

So what now? Can something still be considered creative even if we don't know who the creator is or the process behind its creation? I say it can, especially if you stop looking at cake balls as the product and start looking at them as a medium for creativity. Even if we don't know where a cake ball came from, we can easily see where they're headed and it's definitely something to get excited about. 

If you can dream it, you can probably make a cake ball out of it. One thing that's so great about cake balls are that because the frosting acts as a sort of glue to hold the cake crumbles together, it's really easy to mold a cake ball into any shape you want. Combine this with the all the choices of candied coating and topping options and its easy to see why bakers are going wild with their decorations;  there are balls with baby shower and wedding themes, holidays-inspired ones, and ones that references to pop culture.
It doesn't stop with mere appearances either. You can play with tastes too by combining different flavors of cakes with frosting, or by adding fillings like nuts, coconut shreds, jams, or different spices. Starbucks offers a traditional birthday cake flavor, but if you're feeling adventurous they have also created Tiramisu and Rocky Road flavors. Now, some people are even starting to expand the idea behind cake balls into other baked goodies as well like cookie balls and brownie balls. Compared to an actual cake, the balls and pops are much easier and quicker to make, so they're a lot safer to experiment with and are accessible to both professional and amateur bakers. In this way, cake balls allow for the sort of "play" that leads people to start getting creative.

 So even though we can't examine the who or the how behind cake balls, they're still creative in how they promote others creativity in making them and exploring the possibilities behind these delicious treats .


I believe I can walk


   


Summers had hoped of being a major league pitcher since he was a little boy, but a 2006 hit-and-run accident, leaving Summers paralyzed from the neck down, shattered that dream. Standing, let alone playing baseball, was no longer possible for Summers after the accident. A novel spinal implant device, however, may help Summers, and thousands like him who’ve lost muscle function below the waist, walk again.


An electrode array, created by Dr. Reggie Edgerton and his 11-member team, was inserted over Summer’s lumbosacral spine, which allowed the scientists to send electrical pulses directly through Summer’s spinal cord. These pulses of electricity amplify the motor commands to the paralyzed area, enabling the team to activate circuits of the spinal cords capable of producing movement in the area. The team is hoping that the bursts of training, as well as strenuous training, can help awaken neural circuits capable of making those areas move again.




Summers hasn’t regained the full ability to walk. But because of the surgically implanted device (and his determination and effort), Summers has been able to stand up on his own again. Not only can he bear his own weight, but he can move his toes, ankles, and hips on command- quite a miracle for someone that was paralyzed from the neck down. And although this isn’t a cure for paralysis, the 16 electrodes implanted in his spine have even enabled Summers to take a few steps. He said, "The third day they turned it on, I stood independently after not moving anything in four years." And though he hasn’t been able to return to the mound as a professional pitcher, the device has allowed him to start working as a coach at a Florida baseball camp, since it has resumed certain bodily functions such as sweating that is necessary function to help people handle heat.




This device is certainly groundbreaking, but who is the ingenious mind that created it? Dr. Reggie Edgerton, distinguished UCLA professor, is the leading researcher in the field of neuromuscular plasticity. He has been studying neural networks in the lumbar spinal cord of humans and other mammals, a subject that has always fascinated him, since 1968. Dedicated to finding an answer to how humans can regain control of standing and other function after paralysis and enthused by this domain, Edgerton was intrinsically motivated to find out if a mechanism for recovery was possible.
This device is incredibly creative, meeting not only our class's definition of creativity but that of Steinberg's in one of the readings. This work is novel in that not only has it never been done before, but that it was unexpected. Though optimistic, even Edgerton wasn't sure that the device would be effective in retuning some muscle control in the injured area. Scientists at UCLA and other universities have even called the project "mind-blowing." The brain child of nearly a dozen scientists and with the funding of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, the product is of very high quality. Before being inserted into Summers, it was placed in dozens of paralyzed rats to test its efficacy. And no one would disagree that this product is not what Steinberg calls "appropriate," as it is incredibly useful. Nearly 5.6 American are paralyzed in one way or another, and though this isn't exactly a cure, it can help millions of people gain function in injured muscle.

Like Watson and Crick, Edgerton is a great collector. Watson and Crick were able to collect and then piece together data and findings from a variety of other scientists, like Rosalind Franklin, to come up with the structure of DNA. Edgerton took 30 years of paralysis research, his own and that of others, and used it to create what has now been dubbed a "medical breakthrough" by many in the medical field. Given the extensive amount of research and the previous failed efforts by scientists and doctors to help paralyzed patients regain some function in the injured body part, many were doubtful that an effective clinical treatment for those with paralysis was possible. Even Edgerton said when he first saw Summers standing, "None of us believed it. I was afraid to believe it."

Edgerton, though the head innovator, cited the importance of collaboration in developing these implants. Uzzi and Spiro in their article "Collaboration and Creativity: The Small World Problem" said that "creativity is spurred when diverse ideas are united or when creative material in one domain inspires fresh thinking in another." This kind of collaboration can be seen in the creation of this product. Edgerton, a neuroscientist, not only teamed with other neuroscientists, but with a mechanical engineer, someone from an entirely different domain. With Edgerton's biological knowledge and Joel Burdick's engineering knowledge, the team was able to create the electrodes that are currently in Summer's spinal cord. The team of 11 individuals clearly illustrate a small world network in which this scientific collaboration took place. The group of 11 was able to bounce ideas off of one another, allowing novel ideas in different domains to be utilized by the neuroscientists. However, the collaboration is not too intense, where the collaboration only leads to old or common material being shared.




The device has won many awards and titles this past year, from those inside the field of medicine and from outside, even winning Popular Mechanic's 2011 Breakthrough Award for its ingenuity and its utility. Scientists, including Edgerton and his team, though optimistic about the prospects of this device, are still a little cautious given that Summers is the only human subject to date to be tested with the electrodes. One Scientist, professor Geoffrey Raisman from the Institute of Neurology at UCL, said: "This one case is interesting, and from one of the leading groups in the world. To what extent this procedure could in the future provide a further and sustained improvement cannot be judged on the basis of one patient." However, most in the medical field that have come upon this study acknowledge that though the cure for paralysis is still not out there, this is the closest the world has seen thus far to an effective treatment.

Unexplored Stories


I first became aware of the Basque Country my senior year of high school while studying various regions of Spain in Spanish class. However, because we focused more on other areas, the small community of northern Spain did not stick with me at the time. It was not until the fall I started here at Loyola, when I began following Athletic Club Bilbao, the area’s most prominent and successful soccer team, that I became enamored with the Basques. Athletic Club is unique not only in the world of soccer, but sports in general, for employing only Basque players. This means that while every other team has its pick of top players from all around the world, Athletic has an extremely limited selection from a population of around 3,000,000 people in Spain and France. I was intrigued about this, about why it was of such importance that all the players be tied to the region, so I began researching the Basque country. This quickly changed from a casual curiosity to a near obsession. (I once stayed up until 4 in the morning reading Wikipedia articles about Basque mythology.) I was excited when we watched the movie on Frank Gehry in class because it focused so much on the city of Bilbao. And naturally, when browsing around a second hand bookstore, I was beyond thrilled to find a cheap copy of the book The Basque History of the World by Mark Kurlansky. I was particularly excited at this find because even online information on the Basque Country, and especially it language Euskera, is difficult to come by.


Knowing this, my interest was once again piqued. Not many writers would choose such a topic to write an entire book on, especially considering many people are not even aware of the existence of the Basques. I decided to look into other books Kurlansky has written and discovered that this is not a singular example. One of his most well-known works is entitled Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World; another is Salt: A World History. Almost all of his books are topics that, while understood perhaps superficially by people, are largely unexplored on any deeper level. In each case, he sees a story that has since gone untold, and takes it upon himself to bring it to the world. But with titles like Cod and Salt, one has to question exactly how thrilling these stories could possibly be. How can in depth studies of such ordinary and common topics garner top spots on multiple bestseller lists? By being not just the facts of the matter, but a detailed and often compelling story that explores not only the topic at hand, but every aspect of history and culture touched by these subjects. He does not want to focus one just one aspect of the topic at hand, but rather, as he said in an interview, “I get an idea, something I want to write about and then I have a very long conversation with myself about it. I do have that central spine – the idea. But then I allow myself to run out in a lot of directions.”

However, Kurlansky does not just write non-fiction. He has several fiction works, as well, and even multiple children’s books. This is perhaps one of the main reasons his non-fiction narratives never fall flat. When asked in an interview if he approaches writing the two genres the same, he replied, “Yeah. I find they have a lot in common. How you solve your problems are quite different. In non-fiction you can always go back to the research, whereas in fiction you have to go back to yourself -- which is a little bit scary.” In another interview, along the same lines, he stated that, “I have written a great deal of both and the process is similar. Both involve factual research. But in fiction you have to dig within yourself and your experience for things you find in archives for nonfiction. With fiction often you are the archive.” Beyond the problem-solving matter, there seems to be little difference. For him, cod and salt are not a fish and a rock, but living, dynamic characters, as would be seen in any work of fiction. In The Basque History of the World, the character is an entire nation of people whose history has rarely been shared. For Kurlansky, there is more than just pure fact to every subject; there is always something new to tell.

This is part of the reason he branched into writing books for children and teens. He has said multiple times that he enjoys writing for a younger audience because they are more open and receptive in ways that adults are not. After writing Cod and Salt, he went back and wrote children’s versions of each, along with The World Without Fish: How Kids Can Help Save the Oceans. While telling the story of the risks of overfishing, this book also instructs a young audience on how they can protect fish in the future, with the hopes that once they become adults the lesson will have stuck. But my favorite, probably unsurprisingly, is The Girl Who Swam to Euskadi. 

Written in both English and Euskera, it tells the story of a girl who swims from her home on the east coast to the Basque Country, only to return home and find that no one believes the place is real. I found this concept particularly poignant after an encounter I had with a friend while I was reading Basque History. Even after asking me about the book and reading the back cover, he asked if it was a true story, if these were real people.

This incident highlights just why his books are so unique. While being primarily non-fiction, they are so rich and compelling, it is almost as if such forgotten histories are unreal. The stories are so fantastic and yet so realistic they seem to become a genre unto their own.

Fantastic Mr. Anderson

As I was trying to decide who to choose for this blog entry, I rediscovered this trailer:
Then I remembered just how much I love Wes Anderson's films. And I thought, hey! His movies are pretty creative...maybe he is too. 

I have loved Wes Anderson's movies for as long as I could remember. At first, I only watched his movies because my older brother forced me to, but I always fell in love with the characters and overall quirkiness of his films. The first movie I saw that was directed by him was Rushmore (which I was probably way too young to see at the time), and I have been a Wes Anderson follower ever since.

Wes Anderson is known for "quirky, comical movies with flawed characters" (as is stated in his biography found here). Although he studied philosophy at the University of Texas, his friendship with Owen Wilson after sharing a class together and discovering common interests allowed Wes to pursue a career in filmmaking. As Wes says, they "started talking about writers, but we also talked about movies right off the bat. I knew I wanted to do something with movies. I don't know if he had realized yet that it was an option." Since their days in college, Wes and Owen have collaborated (with Owen as either a writer or actor) on almost every one of Wes' films.

What makes Wes Anderson so creative is that his films are different from most other films I have seen. His ability to connect that quirkiness and his characters' flaws into a unique story is unlike ordinary Hollywood films. Take The Royal Tenenbaums, for example (his third film). This film has an all-star cast who play quirky and unique characters in the Tenenbaum family. Wes Anderson's ability to speak to the development of the family through these characters speaks to his creativity. For anyone who has seen this movie or others, I'm sure you can agree that his creativity shines through this and all his movies.


Wes Anderson's films are a product of collaboration and creativity that are incredibly entertaining. If you have the chance, I suggest watching any of his full-length films, which include Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and his soon-to-be-released Moonrise Kingdom. Take note of the thorough development of characters and his creative instincts that are evident throughout his movies. And maybe you'll be able to connect with some of the quirky characters present in his movies.

Pick a Color

Jin Su Park, a creative design artist from Korea who focuses on communicative problem solving. While still in the pre-production phases, Park has designed a pen that you can scan any color with and then draw with that color ink! As any artist may know, inspiration may come from anywhere at any time and using this pen could come in handy when you see a color you can't get in normal artists' tools.

Jin Su works a lot on solving creative problems especially in the areas of educational resources. Using the pen is easy, as you just press the button and the scanner uses the information to use the right amount of red, green and blue to come up with the ink. In class we talk a lot about where inspiration for creative ideas comes from and while this idea is creative in itself, it also solves the problem many artists may have of just not being able to get the right color when inspiration hits. Sort of like a printer in a pen or the photoshop eyedropper tool, this innovative design starts to bridge the gap between physical and digital artists and designers tools.

I think Jin Su is creating a problem (or making a tiny problem bigger) and solving it. Even for artists now, drawing with an exact color you see in the real world may not be very important but if this product becomes more mainstream I think a lot of artists and designers will begin using tools like these especially if the pen becomes a sort of "color storage bin" where they could store colors they see and use them for later design projects. Collecting inspiration and saving it for later...

Google's Project Glass: Augmenting Reality


Google recently unveiled its newest invention that promises to change how we interface with technology. Dubbed Project Glass, these glasses which look like something out of Star Trek are currently being tested by Google employees. What Project Glass intends to do is allow us to view the physical world with inputs from technology. For example, in the video above, the user can ask for directions to a location and follow them in real time from an augmented reality interface. It is interesting and novel that all this technology can be shown to the user in a different way than an iphone screen. What makes Project Glass so creative is that it takes elements from previous technology such as a GPS, video chat, text messaging, etc. and presents them in a new way that will allow users to have an enhanced experience by presenting information in an augmented reality that will change interactions in everyday life.

Project Glass was developed by Steve Lee, a member of Google X Laboratory, who has a history of novel inventions for Google. His history of creative inventions for Google includes Google Latitude, which allows one to share locations on Google Maps. Steve has also worked with companies such as Yahoo and IBM to develop new software, showing his history of creativity and how it can influence Project Glass. For example, he worked with Yahoo to develop a method of searching for people, which shows in his more current creations such as Google Latitude, which is incorporated into Project Glass. Steve has obviously been collecting information that aids in his creative process. Since he also works with the Google X Lab, there must also be a  high degree of collaboration between in individuals working to develop such a project. Since the lab is highly secretive, but also highly creative, there must be a reasonable Q level in terms of collaboration consisting of tight clusters of individuals with different experiences that can come together to invent something innovative. Also, in order to create something such as Project Glass, there is a certain amount of analogy to Science Fiction since this type of technology was once thought impossible. Using analogies to other current technology as well allows Project Glass to synthesize features that can be included into the final product.

As far as experts in technology are concerned, Project Glass is highly creative. Gizmondo.com writer, Mario Aguilar was highly impressed by Project Glass, hoping that the functionality will be as incredible as the above video. The internet, especially technology blogs and websites, have reported on Project Glass and see it as a futuristic technology that can change how we perceive reality.


With the popularity of this new project, there seems to be people that are divided on whether or not the look of the glasses and voice functionality may be a problem, such as in the above parody video. But regardless, there is an overwhelmingly positive response from the public about Google's latest creation. I for one, cannot wait to have reality fused with technology in a seamless blend that will hopefully enhance our lives, and let us avoid walking into traffic.
