Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, is one
of the most varied talents rising in Hollywood today. He has experience as a
comedian, actor, rapper, director, writer, and producer. Glover got his start
as a writer on 30 Rock working
closely under Tina Fey, and since then he has had a long career acting and
writing for TV. His breakout role was as Troy Barnes in Community on NBC, since then he has exploded in popularity and
expanded his career into many new disciplines. In 2012 he released a stand-up
comedy special Weirdo on Netflix to
positive reviews. In addition to acting and comedy, Donald Glover started his
music career, eventually adapting the stage name Childish Gambino, under which
he has released three studio albums: “Camp”, “Because the Internet”, and “Awaken,
My Love!”.
His music includes some of the most experimental
themes in modern rap, pushing the barriers of rap as a genre and embracing
being nerdy and exploring awkward social scenarios, much like Glover’s own
childhood. He has also experimented with funk and soul mixed into his rap in
later albums. Overall, Glover loves to embrace the weird and different, echoing
his African heritage as well as the culture of the world he grew up in.
Donald Glover’s crowning achievement has been his FX
television show, Atlanta. This show,
from its creation, has been Donald Glover’s project. He created the show inspired
by his childhood in Georgia, plays the main character, directed two episodes,
and was the head writer for the show. In this way, Glover’s creativity is the
defining characteristic of Atlanta,
he expresses many of the fears and anxieties that define modern urban life for
young black men. The show received numerous Emmy awards in 2017 in recognition
of the unique voice that Glover contributes to Hollywood.
In the future, Glove will continue making Atlanta, has promised one more studio
album as Childish Gambino, and will play Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story. His career will
span the next few decades and he is a rising star to watch as he becomes a major
figure in Hollywood.
We actually used Glover in comparison to Martha Graham for our presentation. We found his creative process enthralling and how diverse he is. It seeems as if he is tremendous at everything he does.

With backgrounds from different fields, he was able to combine what he has learnt over the years to help with his career in different ways. By experimenting different genre of music together, as well as implementing the social meaning relatable to himself, his music always gives the vibe of different yet well-mixed creativity.
