Some creatives will chose to continue their work anyway, even if it is not the safe thing to do. The creative that I believe most embodies this idea is Dallon Weekes. Dallon was a member of several different bands through his career, the biggest being Panic! At the Disco.
Becoming a full member of the band in 2010, Weekes was apart of several extremely successful P!ATD albums. During this time, Weekes began writing solo music over a course of multiple years. Weekes ended up leaving Panic! in 2017, and continued working on his own solo music. Weekes partnered with drummer Ryan Seaman to begin creating songs for their own band, I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME. IDKHBTFM blends 80's synth-wave music with modern pop, influenced by bands like Depeche Mode. Their most recent album RAZZMATAZZ released in 2020, with a US tour following in 2022. Weekes' creative process involves experimenting with previous songs created to produce a new and unique take on his own music.
Something I really enjoy about Weekes' creative process is his courage to do what he wants to instead of what he believes others will like. IDK's newest album RAZZMATAZZ is very unique with songs ranging from love, drug abuse, and personal identity. One could argue that it would have been a safer decision for Weekes to stay with Panic! At The Disco, as it is a more well known band. An intrinsic motivation is demonstrated with IDK's music production, as they find motivation to create what they would like, regardless of what people think.
I love the sentiment of this blog post on Dallon Weekes about the importance of taking risks for your dreams. Creativity often requires stepping out of one's comfort zone, which can lead to incredible success and fulfillment. Weekes continuing to explore his creativty and pursue his own path after his success with Panic! At the Disco is very inspiring. His creation of IDKHBTFM is a testament to his distinct sound and his willingness to take risks.
