3D Clothes Printing

Danit Peleg, an Israeli fashion designer, has used 3D printing to redesign the way that people think about fashion. She is the first ever designer to have 3D printed her entire graduate collection. She has taken a concept, i.e. making clothes with physical labor, and completely revolutionized it in a very creative way. She used this idea as a solution to a problem that many people face, wanting a new outfit, yet not having the time, or space when traveling, to go and get it or pack it. She was at a conference and she had been traveling for a while. She needed new clothes and her solution to this problem was to go to the 3D printer and print herself a new skirt. She started it the night before and in the morning all the pieces of the skirt were ready to be assembled.

The first ever garment she made, she felt so free an empowered because she could print and design whatever she wanted, from skirts, to tops, to shoes. In this moment we can see that intrinsic motivation that Gardner talks about on page 25. This feeling liberty and empowerment drives her need to have “creative solutions to problems…when [she] engages in an activity for its sheer pleasure,” meaning 3D printing clothes (25). This explains why she continues “to engage in the area of [her] expertise despite its frustrations” and problems.

One of the problems that she ran into was that she was very dependent on big and expensive 3D printers. Each garment took a lot of time to print, for example, some of her garments took about 300 hours to make. Lastly, the fabrics she was working with were very fragile and sharp, sometimes cutting the models wearing her clothes. She took her creativity and ran with it, however, and was very flexible in creating solutions to her problems. She called an architect who helped her design better fabrics, and solved the issue of the fragile and sharp fabric she was working with before. Nonetheless, she still have the issue to time management and the inconvenience of 3D printers.

With the technological advances being made every day, she is really positive that 3D printing will become more readily available, making it cheaper and faster. She hopes to be able to use materials such as cotton and silk and make it so that people can just print and design a custom fit to their bodies right from their home.

I think that this is a really creative idea, because it’s one that really shows that she thought outside of the box. She is the first one to ever 3D print her entire collection, while 3D printing has been around for about 30 years, she is the first one to really go the extra mile and do something extraordinary that revolutionizes the world of fashion.

  1. This was very interesting to me. I had no idea that you could 3D print fabrics (although it makes sense with everything else you can 3D print nowadays). I like how she understood her limits and collaborated with others to better improve her clothing line. Asking for help doesn't negate her own creativity, it just improved it. I'd be very interested to see how cheaply these clothes could be made and if they last through multiple wearings.

  2. I think this is really interesting. To be able to print your own clothes at home would be useful for many. I also wonder if a business could be made out of it. I wonder if in the future Peleg hopes to sell designs to costumers that can then be put in their own personal 3D printer. Along with this I think this opens up a whole new realm of perfect sizing for everyone. This would be interesting to see if they would be able to create clothing that could be like a tailored fit for each individual.

  3. I found it incredibly interesting that this woman could create various amounts of outfits with a 3D printer. This is another example of a creative person finding creative problems to solutions. 3D printers have been for a long time but no one ever thought of using it this way, so this woman was clearly thinking outside of the box. She is now able to have several different outfits just by having one creative idea!

  4. This makes me wonder about all the different types of material that could be manufactured using various filaments and machining processes. Likewise, I'll be interested to see how fashion and clothing construction changes to better suit the manufacturing process of 3D printing.

  5. I like the idea she has about everyone 3D printing their outfits at home. That's definitely a revolutionary thought that could change the entire clothing industry. It's very interesting that she was the first to come up with this though. Hearing about how long 3D printers have been around, you would think someone would have capitalized on printing clothing by now!

  6. I would love to wear these clothes! I appreciate your connection to Gardner's text. As a dancer and visual artist, it is easy to relate to the drive to create more and find solutions to problems despite the overwhelming amount of frustrations that arise.

  7. Hopefully within the next 10 years or so 3D printers can be more readily available for everybody so that there can be more creative ideas such as this one. I had no idea that 3D printers could print with fabric and I am curious to figure out what else it could make.
