The Rapping Chef
When you think of the prototypical rapper, you don't usually think of a 250 pound former chef born from an Albanian Muslim father and an American Jewish mother. Ariyan Arslani, or how his fans know him as, Action Bronson, is a creative visionary who has taken his passion for several different fields and managed to fuse them together in a way which has brought them all to new heights.

Growing up, Bronson attended culinary school and was an acclaimed New York Chef before a work related injury caused him to take time off from cooking. As a result, he found himself focusing more on his rapping.
His style of rap is one that not many people have heard of. He states that he raps and lives freely like a "Wild Bronco" he can't be tamed, and with lines like, "I might climb up the side of a mountain and trim a bonsai, perfect 10 on the swan dive" it's easy to see his wildly different rapping style. He also draws beats and instrumentals from both sides of his family. It all culminates into a style that feels like a journey every time you listen to it. These songs aren't meant to be catchy with a mindless hook, but instead are meant to allow the audience to expand how they think about music and themselves.

It is this expansion of thought that Bronson has brought to other fields he has pursued. This includes his cooking show on the VICE Youtube channel, Fuck, That's Delicious, where Bronson goes back to his chef roots and travels the world tasting different culinary delicacies and also creating some of his own. He is almost always smoking some form of marijuana during the show and always searches for the wildest types of eats. From the finest crafted duck meals in France to creating the best "munchies" sandwich, Bronson always brings a level of comfort and openness that leaves his viewers very much invested, and its the same way with his music. He is capable of drawing so much emotion from the listener, which allows them to look into themselves and also learn how to enjoy all the little aspects of life in the process. It is easy to see how Bronson incorporates several different fields into his creative process. The merging of these fields amplifies his creativity, as stated in Changing the World A Framework for the Study of Creativity. The care he took as a chef shows in the intricacy of his music. Likewise, his refusal to conform in his music and his creativity shines in his later cooking shows with the vast array of foods he tastes and creates. His process, while unorthodox (marijuana and other drugs) is what he states help develop his thoughts and how he views the world. According to Gardner, Bronson's music and shows display how intrapersonal he is, which in term helps the listener to also look inside themselves.

It is hilarious how this guy basically does what he wants. He just does what he feels at the time, weather it is rapping or cooking or traveling. He is allowed to exercise his full creative potential. Its refreshing to see someone like this in a world where many of us are held down by convention and are unable to be like this zany character.
ReplyDeleteI think the reason people like him so much is preceisely because he does what he wants with such enthusiasm and joy. People are drawn to others when they feel the people they are watching are being authentic to themselves. It is obvious his creativity is his passion. I like that when one door closed for him (even temporarily), he found another outlet for his creative energy. It's also interesting that he has a very similar process for his creativity even between two different fields. I wonder if he uses other drugs in his process?
