I’m pretty sure I listen to Doja Cat every day, and I’m sure you’ve probably listened to at least one of her songs. “Say So” topped charts at #1 in 2020; other songs of hers like “Kiss Me More” (#3), “Need to Know” (#4), “You Right” (#11), and “Streets” (#16) weren’t far behind. Even her most recent album Planet Her made it to #2 in the charts for albums.
Aside from her songs all being amazing, I think part of the
reason I love her music so much is that some of it is funny (like Doja Cat
herself) and/or just a little weird. In my opinion, there is nothing better
than something that is just a tad absurd. A great example of this is the song
that launched Doja Cat into the spotlight “Moo”. If you have not heard the song,
I urge you to go listen to it, or at least look up the lyrics. Doja Cat’s wordplay
is seamless, humorous, and a little bizarre, the perfect blend.
Her process for making “Moo”, along with most of her other songs, consists of a period of isolation. In an interview with Vevo, Doja said that she locks herself in her room until she gets so bored, and then she wants to work. Once she’s working, she loves it and is able to “get into it yuh” (not sorry for the pun).
In the same interview, Doja said that her love of hip hop and rap music is in part because it allows her to act, creating different personas. Doja Cat’s name comes from taking the mysteriousness of a ‘crazy cat lady’ and merging it with her image. Doja’s style is unique and constantly doing new things while all still being aesthetically connected. Her costumes along with her charisma make for amazing music videos. In her interview, Doja said that she loves dancing, and performing, which along with her costumes, pushes her music videos to the next level. All of these elements intrinsically motivate her, and her love of the work shows in her craft. Even when she is not performing or in an outfit, like on Tik Tok, her quirky personality constantly interacts with her love of music to continue to create (her “Return of the Snack” parody is something that always makes me laugh).Doja Cat is incredibly creative, not only for writing so many amazing songs with great wordplay, for her unique outfits and performances, but for constantly creating and doing something new.
It's really interesting to see celebrities such as Doja Cat so active on social media, it really feels like she has her own online persona separate from her music. Though I'm not an avid listener, I always see her TikToks. Although I'm sure there are extrinsic motivations for her to make music because she's part of the music industry, you can very clearly see her intrinsic motivation--it's very obvious that she loves what she does, whether it's performing onstage or creating a silly song about Taco Bell pizza just for fun.
ReplyDeleteI love her! I like think half of her creative method is no-one-care-so-do-it kind of work and the other half is a serious amount of clever and in-touch music. She would do the same if no one liked it - that's so intrinsic. It's the same with her sense of fashion. If I had to relate her to someone else in music, it would have to be Remi Wolf. I think Remi Wolf is a bit further down the road and I love her a lot for it, but each is so similar to the other at scale. Her Nardwuar interviews are incredible.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you noted her personality and charisma influences her music. I wasn't sure how to pin point her musical vibe until I read your article, so I learned something new! Great work!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy Doja so much. I also believe its that absurdity that has made her so popular. On top of this, I feel like she also paves the way for this relatively new group of artists that grew up with Social media, and when people say things like "Does she know that she's a celebrity?" in response to her really absurd tiktoks, I think she is basically just doing what someone who grew up with social media finds funny, which is hilarious! Overall, great article and really good creative choice.
ReplyDeleteDoja Cat is such a compelling artist, and I think it's so cool that you chose to talk about her as a creative individual. I "interact" with her the most through social media, and whether this is conscious or not, her ability to gain incredible popularity with trending audios from parts of her music has given her the great awareness that she deserves!
ReplyDeleteI definitely listen to Doja every day too! Her music is addicting, and I like that you incorporated some of her videos into your post. Her TikTok presence is also super interesting! TikTok is a such a unique platform because I feel like "Big C" celebrity creatives can show a little more of their personality than they can on apps like Instagram. I've also noticed that I have been able to connect with other creatives this way, like Hank Green.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I have to say Doja Cat is one of my favorite artists right now just because shes so funny! I havent seen another popular artist who doesnt care what she does music wise and just releases the songs she likes. Shes such a cool and unique artist and this post is definitely well deserved. She is beyond talented and is one super interesting creative.
