SILVER FOX GEORG JENSEN

THE SILVER FOX, GEORG JENSEN was born into the modest household of a Danish knifegrinder in the mid 1860’s and came into his own metalwork as an adolescent. He started as an intern in Guldsmed Andersen and – when his contract ended – chose to chase his own artistic desires. This desire was in the form of statue as he studied with Theobald Stein but extended himself to include the ceramic arts under another mentor – Joachim Petersen. His works were suitable but the work itself could not sustain him. He then chose to work in models – but the lack of finance remained. His fame starts when he decides to move into the trade of the silversmith. There he was able to find the relation in metalwork and the fine arts and work them into a new set of creativities – and new functions of useable decorative artworks – as a nascent member of the Art Nouveau movement. He transitioned from a manufacturer or executor into a new role as head artistic director at his own firm. Jensen’s creative trail involved numerous iterative drafts and the teamwork of he and his workers with direct contribution of several other kinds of artists until a unified set of aesthetics were found.

We have seen this combination of fine and functional arts and the deliberate serialized method with contributions to an individual man in the first architect of the course. He and his workers – whom he made sure to credit – created thousands of inventive items that reached from silverware to silver worn. A lot of these ideas were new and had no base in the historical context of silversmiths from before. These items were formed in his mind and with his socio-microeconomic sense for both couture and serial brands found him a serious win. He led a life – both as a man and creative – that is hard to describe in miniature. I insist the reader check out the first two sources for more credit to his status as a revolution.
